Knighting ~ A Robin Hood Festival Tradition
Each year, several Sherwood area residents are chosen to be honored for their service to their community. Each person is "knighted" at the Festival by Maid Marian at the Friday evening Knighting Ceremony (to take place July 15, 2022 at 6 PM), and then is known by the title of "Sir" or "Lady".
Knighting is an age-old tradition at the Festival. Over the past 3 decades, more than 400 people have been knighted. In the past, some of the knighted people have been very well known citizens of Sherwood, and others have been folks who quietly made a positive difference to their community. This year twelve more will join these ranks; each of these outstanding people has been nominated by Sherwood citizens for his or her community service. Many of them were selected for this honor in 2020 or 2021, but their knighting was delayed when the Festival was canceled. |
The knighting ceremony will begin this year’s Festival with flair and pageantry on Friday, July 15, at 6 PM on the Family Stage in Veterans’ Park in Old Town. The Maid Marian Court, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, and a variety of costumed villagers will participate in the ceremony; and the Sherwood Renaissance Singers will provide musical entertainment starting at 5:45 pm. The winner of the annual Medallion Hunt will be announced during the ceremony, and Sherwood mayor Keith Mays will read a pronouncement officially opening the 2022 Robin Hood Festival. Please join us in celebrating the knighting of the following individuals (listed in alphabetical order): Susan Archer, Sean Garland, David Gilmore, Corey Kearsley, John Meissinger, Steve Munsterman, Brant Stai, Jenny Swanson, Jason Upton, and Matt Weissbach. Two archers will also be knighted at the opening ceremony of the archery on Saturday, July 16, 8:30 a.m. at Ridges Elementary School. James Benson and Wes Wilhelm will be knighted for their dedication to archery and to the Sherwood-Nottingham International Archery Tournament.
